Culinary Arts vs. Graphic Design?

Im going to be attending an art institute and i would like to know what people think is a better.
I am a girl and i love to cook but i recently toured the school with culinary arts as my primary major and i am not sure now if i like to cook more on my free time than something that i would want to do for a job.

when i was at the school we talked about graphic design and i am very interested in that major now.

what pays more? what would be more enjoyable? which has better working hours?

thanks for ur opinions, but i will do what is best!

  1. I do not know much about the culinary arts, but the graphic is a very competitive field. Even if you have extreme talent and a diploma in the field generally requires a network to get your food in the door. It is often very painful, and if you live together for your own creativity get pounded the way to customer ratings of “art” and what is best for their business.

  2. Pay: Both pay “OK” (you are not getting rich, but you’ll be fine).

Enjoyable: Anyone as long as you like the job.

Stress: BOTH; in both jobs you’ll have supervisors rushing you all the time, and people complaining all the time. Both are hard job: kitchen is heavy work, at the graphic studio sitting in front of a computer for hours can get your eyes tired and drive you mad.

Working hours: Graphic designers usually work on a day shift, but some projects might requires for you to stay working until late at night. . . specially if there’s a deadline. Cook/Chefs might work a day or night shifts; most likely will depends on the employer’s needs.

  3. what pays more?

that really depends and I have to say from experience that don’t choose a job / career because of this. If you truly love one but you choose the other because you only think of pay you may not end up being as successful in the one you picked. You will not end up doing as well and may end up regretting your choice.

Both can pay well however only the best in both fields do really well and expect low pay for the first 3 to 5 years or more.

    what would be more enjoyable?

That is up to you. I think you need to ask yourself where has most of your experiences been if you have been drawing all your life and working with design software then you may want to pick graphics. But if cooking is your true interest and that what you have doing lean towards choose it as a career

    which has better working hours?

Both are the same LONG with some differences.

In restaurants you end up either in the early morning shift prepping and cooking breakfasts and this goes till noon with the lunch crowd. You often can be expected to stay late. and the evening shift usually is the busiest and you have to stay hours after closing to clan up. Some time you will have to do both shifts in a week. This is not to mention events such as weddings where the hours are even longer. I am not talking about the lower paid but the trained chefs have to work these hours. Weekends and holidays can be the roughest and usually its hard to get time off during these periods.

In Graphics, the hours can be long as well however they are usually from 9 to 5 and your weekends are usually off. You are often expected to stay until the jobs done for a deadline. this means Staying till two in the morning and then being back at 9 or 10 am with a smile on. This can often be for a couple of days and you can be asked to stay weekends with no pay. Usually the holidays are no problem and you can take time off.

My opinion is if you enjoy design and cooking then stay with cooking because design is a key element of high end culinary craftsmanship but as a graphic designer you will not be feeding the cooking passion at work, cooking will end up as a hobby or a side thing.

The best way to compare is to contact people in both and ask what are the positives and negatives of both and way your options before you make a decision. I would try and avoid taking something that you know little about just because you think it pays well and is cool. That can often be a mistake and you may end up drooping out.

For be its all about the reward and satisfaction, if you are truly passionate about one then I would focus on it first.

  4. Graphic Design has the potential for a more flexible schedule. It depends what you’re into more. I’m going into graphic design but I’ve always thought that the culinary arts would be interesting.
