Does anyone have any travel tips for traveling with a baby?
We are taking our first road trip to Amarillo, TX to visit my husband’s family with our 2 month old son. It is an 8 hour drive from where we live. I am a little nervous about this new experience, not to mention that we are leaving after my husband gets off of work which is my son’s fussy time. Does anyone have any tips to making this trip a little easier?
Thanks

You need to tell him (yes! your baby) what is gonna happen, tell him you are going away on a trip, etc etc. so he “knows” what’s going on. You will need to buy (if you don’t have already) a car bottle warmer, and you guys will have to stops a few times for diaper change, etc, and also to take him out of the car seat so he can rest too. Maybe he will sleep during the whole trip, maybe it will be a nightmare, good luck either way and have fun in Tx.
Babies are easier to travel with than toddlers. . . I went from the U. K. to Australia with our 2 month old and it was fine. . . she was totally unaware!
As long as she has her basic needs met there’s no need to worry. . . just take rest stops when you need to change the baby.
a little whiskey never hurt. Just Kidding =)
i don’t have any kids, so I don’t really have any experience.
maybe try to keep him up during the day so that when your hubby gets home and ya’ll are ready to leave, baby will be tired and hopefully sleep a while/ also, your hubby will probably be pretty tired after a day’s work, so don’t let him drive all night. he needs to rest too, or else it could be an unsafe trip. you should stop often, and swap driving.
good luck!!
Sarita, I really like your answer. Yes, talk to you baby about it, as this is a person with understanding and great feelings. Yes, it could be a nightmare or total bliss, you never know. But whatever it is, it will be for half a day, including stops, etc.
When at your friends’ place, make sure you bring a folding baby bed or playpen (that’s what I did with my kids). also, pets can react well or not well to a baby in “their” house, so be aware of this. Brings lots of diapers, food and baby cloths. As for the rest, you all have a great time!
I am basically married to the military. . . lol. So we travel long/short trips/moves allot. I have a 5yr and 3yr old. Both boys, so we had our hands full when we traveled. When our youngest was in his early months we would switch who sat in the back with him and who drove to keep him occupied with play toys, music, bottles, etc. Also try stopping at most rest stops and letting him out in the fresh air for a lil while. If your baby is used to music, keep it on, if he’s used to warm bottles make sure you invest in a bottle warmer, you can find cheap ones at stores like walmart, target, drug stores, etc. Also, try finding out if your local library has rental travel DVD players if you don’t have one, b/c although he is only 2months old, this might help him have something to look at when you or the dad is tired of sitting in the back. Good Luck
Hi!
We have taken several road trips with my now 1 yr old. The first suggestion I have is to leave at night. It is harder on you, but will make the trip much more bearable. If you can’t do that, then I would sit in the back with him so that you can react to his needs easily. Stop as often as you think he needs and play nursery rhymes.
Otherwise, try not to stress, he will feel it!
Good Luck!
