I’m a mom and I’m not sure if I should go to Culinary School?

I’m a mom of a 10yr old girl with autism and and 8yr old boy, I’ve been a stay at home mom for 10yrs, in high school I majored in art and fashion, I wanted to become a fashion designer and go to FIT in nyc but I felt to intimidated, so I decided to go to art school. That didn’t last long because I couldn’t afford it, I really miss doing art. Two yrs. ago I thought about working in a bakery, I worked in walmart as a cake decorator, and I really liked it, but they said I was slow, but they had no problem giving me a raise, and they wanted to switch to produce, and there was a rude old lady who was jealous because I learned quicker than her, and nobody liked working there but me and the head baker, so I left. So I thought about going to culinary school in the city for the Pastry and Baking Diploma so I visited the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan, I really enjoyed the tour and would like to do it but I live in upstate Ny, I can’t do it during the week ’cause my kids are in school. They do have weekends but it’s sat. and sun. 9-5pm and I won’t get home til’ after 8pm, and I have to do this for 8-10 months, so I won’t be able to spend time with my husband and kids on the weekends, and I feel bad because he won’t be able to do much either. Plus my mom won’t be able to see the kids because she lives in the city, my husband doesn’t want to spend all day with my mom, so that’s the dilemma. So should I spend $26,000 on a loan and do it, or just take the individual classes at the school and other culinary schools, and If I take individual classes in culinary schools will I still be able to get a job in a bakery in the city? I figured If I took some classes I would be a little faster, I’ve looked at a lot of bakery positions and they do want you to have experience, so should I start out as a counter/cashier? and If I take classes how do I show it on my resume?, and should I show pictures of what I did in class?, a portfolio of some sort? I would like to get a diploma to know I accomplished something, but do I really need one? I want to go for it, but it’s so long to go without my weekends and family? Don’t know what to do, any advice out there? Thanks.

  1. It’s temporary! In the long run you will make it work. Follow your dreams. I would go for it because the reward will be a bigger pay off. Your husband needs to let you spread your wings. Search all your options for day care, babysitters, programs for your children while you are in school. It’s going to be a strain for a year but the financial impact to your family will be a reward. Not only will you make more money but you will feel much better about yourself and your accomplishments. Look into support for your son and see if there is a special needs program that he can get into? It’s a big step but in the long run it will pay off.

Let’s look at the potential payback for a $26,000 loan.
How much more money would you make per hour working as a cake decorator or in a specialty bakery with the skills you would acquire at the culinary school? Let’s be generous and say an extra $5 per hour. By the time you factor in taxes, it would take you 4-5 years to earn enough to re-pay the loan, and that’s not counting interest on the loan.
Increasing your job skills and upgrading your education are always good things, but this school sounds way too expensive for what it’s providing. Look around and see if A) you can find a more affordable school or one closer to home, or B) look for a school that teaches you a skill that will help you earn much more than you making now.
Don’t be discouraged, artistic talent is a rare and valuable skill. You just need to find the best possible outlet for you and your family.

  3. 8-10 month for a degree? and you would be doing something you love!!! just because youre a mom doesnt mean you have to put your life on hold. explain the situation to your mom and husband and kids. . . . . and let them know this is something that means alot to you and that it would mean even more if everyone could be a team for the alloted time it would take for you to complete your schooling.

ive graduated from FIT and heres the best advice i can give you. . . .

    1. everything you make, photodocument it. only the best work. you dont want to showcase any bad work. take pictures or all the baking you do and how you decorate it. this will be a portfolio.

    2. i would say take a few casses first before you commit yourself into a 26000$ investment and see how u like it.
    3. you already have so much to put on your resume!!!!. . . the art school experience, working at a bakery, customer service. . . . .
    4. try doing some baking at home!!! you can develop a portfolio even before you go to school bc they are gonna probably need one for you to get in!!
