You could take Metro-North. Poughkeepsie is the last stop on the Hudson Line. Much better on-time using Metro-North, but it takes a bit longer. To check the on-time performance on Amtrak, look up the route description (The Maple Leaf, for example), and in the upper right corner of that train description should be the on-time percentage. (Amtrak site is down right now or I’d look it up).
Metro-North leaves from Grand Central, Amtrak from Penn Station.
Edited: The on-time percentage info seems to be gone fom Amtrak’s site, sorry about that.
The trip from Penn Station to Poughkeepsie is pretty reliable as far as on time performance. Yes, you could take a Metro-North train, but Amtrak is quicker. Train 63 should get you there in plenty of time, and since Poughkeepsie is only 75 miles or so into its route, there really shouldn’t be a problem.
Short distance = reliable arrival time. 75 miles from the train origin in Penn Station is a short distance. Go for it, and enjoy the scenery!
If you go to http://www. Amtrak. com / servlet / or index? pagename = Amtrak / Page / & cid = 1202243059386 OTP_Route_List you can see results over time for each channel Amtrak.
That train will be on time.
But you should be looking at Metro-North trains, which run out of Grand Central much more frequently and stop many more places and are better at running on time.
