As quickly as you can say “sleeping splendid sculpture”, name one of the sculptures housed in Vatican City. If you answered Colonna Venus, then right you are! But did you know that this sculpture is a replica of Aphrodite in Turkey? Yes you read that right. Turkey is actually home to one of the most stunning ancient ruins in the world. Knidos or Cnidus is an ancient city nestled in the Turkish peninsula Datca. It used to be the home of Aphrodite as a famous sculpture of Praxiteles. It is said that the sculptor created this masterpiece at around 350 BC. The Missing GoddessLike the Colonna Venus in Vatican City, Aphrodite is rendered nude in the ancient sculpture. In ancient times, the sculpture was placed in a small temple by the sea. Sadly, it went missing and up to this day archeologists are still searching for it. So what else is there to see in Knidos if Aphrodite is nowhere to be found? Well, any Datca vacation is incomplete without a stop in this ancient site. Imagine getting a glimpse of the ancient world while having the lovely sea as your backdrop. Now that’s a real treat for any historian, hiker or beach buff. A Glimpse of the PastAside from the temple of the missing goddess, you’ll see a temple of the Muses, a temple of Dionysus, the theater, the agora and an odeum. Of course you’ll find other more structures that are traces of this city’s ancient past. Archeologists say that Knidos is most probably a Lacedaemonian colonization. That is not to say that Knidians did not have their own share of colonies. In fact, the island of Lipara was among them. Knidians were also active in the field of commerce with their favorable location. During your visit, you’ll find several structures fashioned with a Byzantine style. This can be attributed to the probable rise in population in Knidos during the Byzantine period. This is also the reason why you’ll see some Christian sepulchers among the ancient ruins. Reaching History While leaving Knidos can be the toughest thing to do, getting here is not that daunting. You have a choice between coming by car or by boat. If you go with the former then expect to meet some challenges as you’ll be passing by winding mountain roads. If you choose the latter, all you have to do is ride a boat from Bodrum or the Datca Port. Either way, you can find several tours to Knidos through various travel agencies.
