Okinawa – Top 5 Travel Tips

Transcript: “Heading to Okinawa? These are my Top 5 picks for what to do while you are there. First, head to Shuri Castle. This ancient fortress is fully restored. and – Shuri is located on top of hill, so you get one of the best views in Naha. Second on the list, shop and eat on Kokusai Dori. This is Okinawas most famous street. It is busy, busy, busy and it has tons of restaurants and shops with colorful souveniors and authentic Okinawa crafts as well. Your third stop should be the WW2 Peace Memorial. This is located at the southern end of the island. The memorial has the names of everyone who died in the battle of Okinawa. it is a moving monument that is surrounded by stunning views. I also recommend that you visit Ocean Expo Park and Churaumi Aquarium. There is a village with authentic Okinawan architecture. and – the aquariums largest tank has a whale shark that dwarfs the audience beneath it. Finally, after you taste the food – enjoy the music – and see the sites – head to the beach. Okinawa is a warm, sunny paradise with tons of great Sand, so take some time to soak up the rays and relax.”

That’s a good tip! Thanks for sharing.

  7. If you allow me, I would like to add the Okinawa Museum in Naha (so you get a good idea of Okinawa’s golden age, the war and post-war trouble with the US). Knowing these things makes you appreciate Okinawa even more, as suddenly you will recognize and understand things.
Then go to Shuri Castle, and walk along the Stone Paved Alleys back to Kokusai Dori for a good dinner!

  8. James, I enjoy your videos about Okinawa. I lived there as a teen in ’78-’83 and loved the place. It’s such a beautiful island. I remember Expo ’75 (or ’76) that you call Ocean Expo. I think they had a Great White on display when I was there although they don’t tend to fare so well in captivity so I’m not sure how long it lasted. I also loved Okuma Falls a swimming hole you have to hike to, but then you swim in this beautiful place and can go under the waterfall.

  9. i don’t know about “the show” but whisper alley is off gate 2 street outside kadena. it is hardly a district-more like a small alley consisting of two houses where 60+ year old women still sell themselves. as for “the show”, well, i have never heard of it. i’m trying to think of places around camp schwab but i think the nearest area of fun (i use that word loosely) is around the camp hansen area.

  10. i was there for 2 years and never heard of those places

  11. I’ve been to all 5 =) The beach near the Expo park has beautiful white sand. I recommend snorkeling or scuba diving in Okinawa. The water is so clear and there is a ton of colorful fish near the coral.

  12. Stay out Whisper Alley(redlight district) and The Show(strip joint) If you get station at Camp Schwab, you may want to refer to this video.
